Christine O’Donnell to Delaware Voters: “I’m Not a Witch, I’m You”
Senate candidate and Tea Party-backed Christine O’Donnell made headlines when she was able to upset heavily favored GOP nominee Mike Castle during the previous Republican senate primary for Delaware. The endorsement by the Tea Party Movement and Sarah Palin days before the primary was seen as the ultimate key to O’Donnell’s victory. The upset was so huge that Republicans warned about the consequences it has brought to the goals of the GOP in the upcoming polls which is to regain control of the House and the Senate. She will now be facing a well-funded and established Democratic candidate Chris Coons for the Delaware senate seat.
Because of her widespread popularity, O’Donnell is now the subject of many criticisms with some even going overboard. On September 18, 2010, comedian Bill Maher aired a previously recorded clip of O’Donnell’s appearance on his former 1999 television show, Politically Incorrect. Seen in the clip is a footage of O’Donnell uttering the following words “I dabbled into witchcraft — I never joined a coven ... I hung around people who were doing these things. I'm not making this stuff up. I know what they told me they do” and “One of my first dates with a witch was on a satanic altar, and I didn't know it”. Because of such remarks, Maher said he would continue to show more exclusive clips until O'Donnell agreed to appear on his current show.
The upcoming midterms isn’t going well for O’Donnell. Recent surveys suggest that O’Donnell is trailing Coons with a huge 2 digit margin. According to a September 21, 2010 Fox News Poll, Coons is leading by 15 points over O’Donnell with only 5 percent of voters left undecided. It might seem that the “Witch” propaganda may have spelled doomed to her candidacy. Not losing hope, O’Donnell recently launched her first TV Ad with the central theme of “I’m not a witch, I’m you”. She clarified that the she isn’t certainly a witch and that she pretty much belongs to the society she is in (Delaware).
Dressed in a black blazer and pearls, she addresses the camera with the following words:
“I'm nothing you've heard. I'm you. None of us are (sic) perfect. But none of us can be happy with what we see all around us. Politicians who think spending, trading favors and backroom deals are the way to stay in office. I'll go to Washington and do what you'd do. I'm Christine O'Donnell and I approve this message. I'm you”.
Despite of her strong message that she is indeed not a witch, O’Donnell may still have a hard time convincing people that she is really for them. Her rival, Chris Coons is still enjoying a comfortable lead in recent polls especially that we are nearing the midterms.

Sharron Angle: "The Republicans have lost their standards, they've lost their principles”
"The Republicans have lost their standards, they've lost their principles. ... Really, that's why the machine in the Republican Party is fighting against me. ... They have never really gone along with lower taxes and less government”. These were the words used by Tea Party-backed and Republican senate candidate Sharron Angle in describing the present situation of the Republican Party during a recent taped discussion which accidentally leaked in public. Angle is also desperately persuading another Tea Party-backed candidate, Jon Scott Ashjian, to drop out of the Nevada senate race and leave the race to Angle and her democratic opponent.

The leaked tape was immediately defended by Angle’s camp stating that she was only expressing the feelings of the Nevada community. Angle’s spokesman Jarrod Agen said the following words, “Sharron expressed what many working families in Nevada and across the country are feeling”. He also added “They are angry with Harry Reid, they are angry with Washington D.C., and they want blunt plain-spoken leaders who are willing to shake things up”. Democrats have been using the video to explain to voters how hypocritical the relationship of Angle with the D.C. Republicans.
Despite the evidence of her badmouthing with the party, National Republicans have continuously expressed their support to Angle and even defended her from various criticisms. With Democrats strongly criticizing Angle as having too extreme views, she eventually received an endorsement from the state’s largest newspaper, Las Vegas Review-Journal. The editorial board suggested that Reid could offer voters only the status quo and Angle had the more promising political platform.

Things are Heating Up in the New York Gubernatorial Race
About 5 weeks from now, Americans will again be voting for politicians who they think are the answer to their problems and struggles. And this election is expected to be a tight one despite the already growing hatred and dissatisfaction of voters towards Democrats. While recent polls point out to an impending Republican takeover of Congress this November, Pres. Obama and his Democrats are still optimistic that their last ditch efforts to fire up young voters and their die-hard supporters will save them from a projected catastrophic election. Now as I am saying this, recent studies show that attack ads and black propaganda are on the rise this campaign period.
In the New York Gubernatorial race, Tea Party-backed and GOP candidate Carl Paladino have recently released allegations that his Democratic Rival, Andrew Cuomo was quite infidel with his previous wife. Paladino is now accusing Cuomo of infidelity as a reason for his failed marriage. In a recent interview by Politico.com, Paladino uttered the following words, “Has anybody asked Andrew Cuomo about his paramours? … When he was married — or asked him why his wife left him or threw him out of the house? Has anybody ever done that? What are they doing intruding on my life?”…
Paladino was seen as visibly angry and upset after news reports pointed him to have fathered a child in some affair way back. He reportedly channeled that anger towards Cuomo by making such allegations. According to Politico.com, there was no public allegation or evidence which points to Cuomo having an affair outside his former wife. In fact, Cuomo’s former wife, Kerry Kennedy, reported to have left the marriage and had an affair with socialite Bruce Colley. Paladino’s actions are a perfect example of candidates who deviate from traditional statewide campaign norms. Topics such as infidelity are such sensitive topics and must not be used in the name of politics.
Meanwhile, Paladino also hit headlines when he reportedly threatened to “take out” a news reporter. New York Post state editor, Fred Dicker, approached Paladino in a business confab and demanded him to present valid evidences to back up his claims of Cuomo’s infidel past. Paladino immediately responded by stating that he had the necessary evidence though he will only be presenting it in the most appropriate time. He then said “You send another goon to my daughter's house and I'll take you out, buddy”. And we will be expecting things to get hotter as election time comes closer.

Four Antidotes for the Four Major Themes of the Tea Party Movement
There are numerous questions left answered towards the many different problems that plague the nation. The victories of the Tea Party in various GOP primaries is just a testament to the many lessons the Republicans can get from the scorching anger that the Tea Party activists are displaying. In being able to identify the 4 main themes of the movement, Bradford Kane also gave the antidotes for each theme. It is very important that whoever gets those seats this November, should give their attention to the concerns of this movement or suffer the same fate that Democrats will soon have.
On Fiscal Responsibility
Being the central theme for these upcoming midterm elections, fiscal responsibility should be on top of everyone’s agenda. It is very important for these lawmakers to focus on job creation as this is the only way for the economy to experience growth. There should be an effective and inexpensive way to conduct job skills training. The bulk of unspent stimulus money can be used for e-learning programs which will further widen the skill set of unemployed workers. To ensure the long-term sustainability of our economy, deficit reduction should also be prioritized. The bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform will recommend ways to reduce the debt and deficit such as reducing defense spending, increasing taxes on large corporations and phasing out spending for certain programs.
On the Role of the Government
The role of the government remains to be a legitimate topic for debate, and can best be addressed by specifically identifying what the American people would lose if the federal government were limited or controlled. The voting population may still be unease with the proposal of privatizing social security and Medicare, eliminating civil rights laws and financial companies taking advantage of consumers. They may not also be in favor of dismantling unemployment insurance and educational programs. This remains to be a major topic for discussion and evaluation. While some roles of the government should be better off handled by U.S. states, others are still better addressed by the federal government itself.
On Anger
Voters should be critical enough and must know that, whoever they choose, that candidate will be bringing along a wide range of political views, not only the few that they usually reiterate during the campaign. Each race should be localized, with a focus on the choice between the particular candidates, rather than on national trends. Radical proposals which stem from anger can be countered with sound policies toward shared objectives. Voters should realize that the sound policies of Obama will only take effect in the coming months. The upcoming elections should be nationalized, giving full attention to what the Tea Party candidates say they would do.
On Demonization
Demonization is quite destructive in nature based on distrust and prejudice. Americans of all political beliefs should strongly condemn attacks that are based on baseless allegations and false accusations. There is now, more than ever, a greater need for decency and civility rather than hateful and antagonistic rhetoric behavior. The recent issue with regards to the planned construction of an Islamic center right near the ground zero site is a perfect example of the destruction that demonization may bring. By practicing collaboration, civility and dialogue, a compromise can be done in order to avoid conflict and have a more harmonious society.

The Four Major Themes of the Tea Party
With thousands of Americans losing their jobs every day and with thousands more growing desperate in looking for viable source of living, People are beginning to lose their patience and are directly blaming the government for such chaos. The massive frustration of Americans towards the Obama administration and the Democratic-controlled Congress will surely be evident during the upcoming Midterm elections this November. The Tea Party Movement rose out of these frustrations and is now telling the government that the voices of the American population must be heard. In order to fully understand the movement, Editor of “The Bipartisan Bridge”, Bradford Kane, talks about the four major characteristics that the party is focusing this November.
Fiscal Responsibility
It is quite evident that the Tea Party came into existence because of the growing concerns of people towards the rapid federal spending, the ballooning national debt, the continuous rise of the budget deficit, the unreasonable taxes and the capital infusions of banks and automobile manufacturers. Despite of the stimulus package that gave financial assistance to banks and large institutions enabling them to recover and avoid any further damage, it is still unfair for people that much of the package was only benefiting these large businesses while millions of families still suffer today. As long as there is excessive spending done by the government which contributes to more deficits and debts, the Tea Party will continue to dwell on these issues and criticize the priorities of the government.
Role of the Government
As seen from these fiscal issues, the Tea Party strongly considers reducing the scope of the federal government. A smaller government is what the movement is proposing. Many of its supporters would like the Federal government to limit its focus on defense and other international issues. They want the states themselves to handle it instead. In this way, the Federal government can focus more on more important matters such as propelling the economy. Also, the party is strongly objecting two of the government’s fundamental social responsibility roles – providing social safety-net and regulating industries which have direct impacts on safety, health, environment, consumer protection, justice and the economy.

In Alabama, grassroots activists have expressed their anger and discontent towards Republican congressional candidate Mo Brooks. He reportedly signed and expressed his support towards the national Tea Party-backed agenda “Contract from America” on Sunday. But a day later, his name went missing from the list of supporters thus prompting activists to probe Brooks. According to Ryan Hecker, a Houston activist who’s behind the Tea Party agenda, Brooks wanted his name to be removed for the reason that he received pressure from his Democratic opponent for not supporting earmarks.
Alabama congressional candidate and Democrat Steve Raby strongly criticized Brooks for supporting the agenda showing his intentions to reject federal funding for the district. If we look closer at the Tea Party agenda, we can see a section there that calls for an end to earmarks until the federal budget is in balance. Brooks immediately explained his actions stating that the he didn’t treat the provision as a way to ban earmarks. In fact, he strongly supports them so that more dollars will be poured towards his district. He also uttered the following words ““He (Raby) is knowingly misrepresenting my view”.

When Christine O’Donnell was able to snatch the Republican nomination against GOP-backed Mike Castle for the senate seat in Delaware, she immediately gained political fame for having defeated a strong contender for the seat. Out from the ashes came a populist political movement in the United States of America that aims to reduce taxes and implement reform in the government. The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and a series of health care reform bills triggered a series of local and national protests which eventually saw the emergence of the Tea Party Movement. In a recent phone interview with the president of the Consumer Watchdog group, Jaime Court uttered the following words, “Popular anger can be such a force for change, and people who support progress can’t allow the tea party to use that anger for their ends, which is to get control of the reins of government and then do away with it”. People who view the ad will also be directed to Court’s recently published book entitled, “The Progressive’s Guide to Raising Hell”. The book discusses the power of public outrage as a driver for change and development.
According to Neutron Media, the Toronto-based company that owns the ad space, the ad will be aired 18 times a day until Oct. 15. Consumer Watchdog is famous for it’s the lawsuits it filed against the insurance industry and other corporations. Its proceeds are done accounted for about one-third of its funding. The group also receives significant financing from trial lawyers and labor unions. A Closer Look at the New York Gubernatorial Race
The Tea Party victories in various Republican primaries are perhaps the most talked-about and most surprising events to occur for the upcoming November midterm elections. Christine O’Donnell’s victory over Mike Castle in the Delaware Republican senate primary instantly became the talk of the town. Sharron Angle also made her presence felt in Nevada by defeating Republican candidate Sue Lowden in the Nevada primary. And with just 6 weeks left before the polls, the GOP has been particularly busy in trying to adapt to the culture that the Tea Party Movement has brought them.
Being the third most populous state in the United States, the New York gubernatorial race is very important to look upon. The state’s Attorney General and certified Democrat, Andrew Cuomo, is expecting a tough battle against Republican Carl Paladino and several other minor-party candidates. Paladino, is an American businessman from Buffalo, New York. His candidacy is widely supported by the Tea Party Movement. He ultimately defeated Rick Lazio, Steve Levy, and Myers Mermel for the Republican Nomination.
A Quinnipiac University poll released on September 1 clear showed the huge lead of Cuomo over Paladino with a score of 60 percent compared to Paladino’s 23 percent. That poll was released just two weeks before Paladino’s Republican primary victory. Cuomo has been strongly favored to win the gubernatorial race especially that New York is considered a heavily Democratic state and that he is the son of a popular former New York Governor, Mario Cuomo.
But a poll conducted by the Quinnipiac University on Wednesday showed that Paladino has pulled within 6 percentage points of Democrat Andrew Cuomo. It seems that Paladino was able to take advantage of his huge Republican victory and it has given him a fighting chance. In the latest poll, 18 percent considered themselves as part of the Tea Party Movement. About 77 percent expressed their support for Paladino while only 18 percent was for Cuomo.
Paladino’s candidacy is based on his platform to cut unnecessary taxes and dismantle parts of the state bureaucracy that he called obsolete. With regards to the planned Islamic center just two blocks away from the site of the September 11 attacks on New York City, Paladino commented that if elected governor, he will use his power to stop the mosque and make the site a war memorial instead. He is being strongly supported by the Tea Party Movement which advocates smaller government, reducing taxes, and less regulation of private business. In the latest poll, 18 percent considered themselves as part of the Tea Party Movement. About 77 percent expressed their support for Paladino while only 18 percent was for Cuomo.
Paladino’s candidacy is based on his platform to cut unnecessary taxes and dismantle parts of the state bureaucracy that he called obsolete. With regards to the planned Islamic center just two blocks away from the site of the September 11 attacks on New York City, Paladino commented that if elected governor, he will use his power to stop the mosque and make the site a war memorial instead. He is being strongly supported by the Tea Party Movement which advocates smaller government, reducing taxes, and less regulation of private business. It is also a political group that strongly criticizes the workings of President Barack Obama.

Despite of the upset victory, O’Donnell will most likely have a hard time as surveys show that 54% of likely voters favor her Democratic Rival Chris Coons while 39% will vote for her. The outcome of the upcoming November U.S. midterm elections will certainly be determined by key issues in the country. With unemployment levels among American cities going higher and with job scarcity presenting a dangerous threat, American voters will certainly consider the economy as a driving force for their votes. With so much at stake, political candidates and groups often result to desperate measures such as attack ads and offensive propagandas just to gain an edge over their rivals. Various surveys showed a significant increase in advertisement spending with offensive ads having the highest increase in years. But perhaps nothing is more bizarre than taking the issue of witchcraft against a political candidate.
Last Tuesday, Christine O’Donnell shocked America and took the spotlight when she defeated Republican candidate Mike Castle during their senate primary in Delaware. Castle was a Republican nine-term representative which was long been favored to win. On the other hand, O’Donnell was a marketing consultant who was making her third bid for a seat in the Delaware senate. She was also strongly endorsed by Sarah Palin and has reportedly received funding from the Tea Party express amounting to $150,000.
Upon hearing the news about O’Donnell’s victory in Delaware, several officials from the GOP have claimed that O’Donnell’s victory may have jeopardized the Republican’s efforts to regain control of the senate. Many political analysts mentioned that although O’Donnell was able to win the majority, Castle was the better choice and would have strengthened the position of the party in the upcoming November elections. There also have been numerous criticisms that were directed towards O’Donnell.
Considered as a first in U.S. senate politics, O’Donnell has been criticized for her previous remarks claiming that she practiced witchcraft. A famous TV program by Bill Maher in 1999 called “Politically Incorrect” has shown O’Donnell uttering the following words: “I dabbled into witchcraft. I never joined a coven." She also added the words “One of my first dates with a witch was on a satanic altar, and I didn't know it. I mean, there's a little blood there and stuff like that”.
Karl Rove, who is a vocal critic of O’Donnell, called out O’Donnell to face this controversy. He also mentioned that there are serious questions about background, character and statements that O’Donnell must answer and clarify. At a picnic the past weekend, O’Donnell downplayed the witchcraft rumors blaming it to be a case of high school immaturity. He further added the words “How many of you didn't hang out with questionable folks in high school?” Last week, Maher said that he will keep O’Donnell hostage by airing old “Politically Incorrect” footage of O’Donnell for as long as she refuses to appear on the show.

Independents are Shifting Their Support to Republicans
The upcoming midterm elections this coming November is projected to be a seesaw battle between the Democrats and Republicans. With control of the senate at stake, both political parties are doing whatever they in order to win most of the vacated seats. The result of the survey comes as a surprise considering that independents generally have negative views towards the GOP.
A follow-up interview which was conducted after the victory last week of Tea Party-backed candidate Christine O’Donnell showed how the Democratic influence is rapidly decreasing. The Republican lead in the upcoming congressional election has reached 22 points, 40% to 18%, with all likely-to-vote independents. Independents have also showed strong support for the extension of Bush-era tax cuts among all Americans. It is good to note that Pres. Obama and several democrats have proposed the continuation of the tax cuts only to people who earn less than $150,000 a year.

For the Senate race, Lawyer and Tea Party candidate Joe Miller defeated Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the Alaskan GOP primary. The win was so shocking that Murkowski has now been pondering on the idea of a write-in candidacy. In Nevada, influence from the Tea Party Express along with other endorsements from out-of-state groups propelled Sharron Angle to defeat former state Republican leader Sue Lowden. Angle is now looking forward in dethroning Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. GOP-backed businessman Ron Johnson easily won his primary in Wisconsin. It was reported that Johnson sought the help of Tea Party activists.

Biden to Democrats: Never Underestimate Tea Party Candidates
Just recently, we all heard about the shocking defeat of popular GOP Rep. Mike Castle to Tea Party-backed candidate Christine O’Donnell at the Republican primary in Delaware. The upset was so huge that it is now the talk of the town and one that deserves a political story. We all know that Washington is currently led by Democrats as they form the majority. Republicans, have designed a master plan to take back control of the House most especially the U.S. senate. In order to do this, they should ultimately win most of the seats that are up for grabs during the coming midterm elections.
Delaware is one of the nation’s smallest and least populous states. Despite of this, the defeat of Castle at the race may have already jeopardized the chances of GOP in taking control of the Senate in November. Castle was a veteran congressman and was highly favored to win easily in the race. He was the kind of Republican that Delaware wanted; fiscally conservative but moderate in social issues. Then after came O’Donnel who was endorsed by the Tea Party Express. She is pro-life and was successful in positioning herself as the anti-establishment candidate.
Initially, the Republicans thought that the coming of the Tea Party Express was a significant boost to their campaign especially that Tea Party activists are Anti-Washington. They are discontented with the things that are happening today in the country and would certainly favor change in governance. It was just until recently when they realized that the Tea Party may in fact hurt the Republican cause. Another problem is that Republicans can’t rely too much on Tea Party anger in order to win this November. They also have to appeal to independents especially most of them are easily turned off to O’Donnell’s extreme rhetoric and far-right views.
Despite of an impending Republican defeat, Democrat leaders are not taking things lightly. On Wednesday, Vice President Joe Biden urged his fellow Democrats to not underestimate Tea Party Candidates. He further emphasized that if progressives are not energized come this November election, they may well be faced with unforeseen circumstances that will endanger that things that they most care about. It is good to note that aside from O’Donnell’s upset victory, there are 8 other Tea Party victories that were registered during the senate primaries.
Biden also said that the present accomplishments of the Obama administration such as the reform in the U.S. health care system, establishment of laws with regards to hate crimes and the regulation of tobacco will all be put at risk if Democrats become too complaisant. They are discontented with the things that are happening today in the country and would certainly favor change in governance. It was just until recently when they realized that the Tea Party may in fact hurt the Republican cause. Another problem is that Republicans can’t rely too much on Tea Party anger in order to win this November. They also have to appeal to independents especially most of them are easily turned off to O’Donnell’s extreme rhetoric and far-right views.
Despite of an impending Republican defeat, Democrat leaders are not taking things lightly. On Wednesday, Vice President Joe Biden urged his fellow Democrats to not underestimate Tea Party Candidates. He further emphasized that if progressives are not energized come this November election, they may well be faced with unforeseen circumstances that will endanger that things that they most care about. It is good to note that aside from O’Donnell’s upset victory, there are 8 other Tea Party victories that were registered during the senate primaries.
Biden also said that the present accomplishments of the Obama administration such as the reform in the U.S. health care system, establishment of laws with regards to hate crimes and the regulation of tobacco will all be put at risk if Democrats become too complaisant. There are other major issues such as the Bush-era tax cuts that they should thoroughly discuss. The main point of Biden’s speech is to make every Democrat aware that the opposition is real and will give them a real fight this coming November.

Tea Party’s Victory Endangers the GOP’s Goal of Retaking the Senate
On November 2, 2010, the United States midterm elections will take place in which 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and 33 to 34 seats in the U.S. Senate will be occupied by a new elected official. Several U.S. states will also be electing their governors and state legislatures to four year terms. For voters, this is a perfect opportunity to implement change in the government and elect deserving and capable government officials.
At a time where the economic recession has caused turmoil on the American economy prompting the sudden increase in the rate of unemployment, citizens have been very concerned about the way the government is being handled by its officials. The failure of the Stimulus package and the inability of the present Obama administration to create jobs are greatly influencing the votes for the coming election. The GOP Republican party is expected to win the most number of seats enabling them to retain control of the U.S. Senate.
In an unexpected turn of events, the GOP’s primary aim of winning back control of both chambers of Congress may have turned into jeopardy. It is interesting to note that O’Donnell’s victory is the eight instance where a Tea Party-endorsed candidate has defeated an established GOP contender. Two weeks ago, Joe Miller, who is backed by the Tea party, defeated Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski for the primary.
Traditionally, the state of Delaware strongly favors electing moderate candidates. According to a Public Policy Polling, only 31 percent of the Delaware voting population believes that O'Donnell is fit and capable to hold office. According to the latest PPP survey, she is trailing Democrat opponent Chris Coons by 16 points. It has also been reported that the GOP might even refrain from using money to aid O’Donnell for the race. The GOP will now have an almost impossible task considering that Delaware was used to be GOP stronghold.

Firefighter's Labor Union Fight for their Pay Amidst City Budget Cuts
Since the start of the recession, there have been hundreds of businesses declaring bankruptcy resulting in the removal of thousands of jobs in the U.S. With an unemployment rate which stood at 9.6%, it is now wonder that the U.S. government is facing a daunting task of saving the economy and getting the country out of the recession. Government employees are perhaps the most affected by the crisis as thousands of them are being removed from their post every week in response to the proposed budget cuts within the government.
And just recently, firefighters were in danger of being removed from their jobs or at least receive less compensation and benefits. This came as a direct result of the budget cuts and the lack of funds by U.S. states. A recent survey conducted by the National League of Cities reported that over one-fifth of U.S. cities have reopened contracts in order to reduce the compensation of public employees which includes firefighters. For example, official in the city of Miami has approved across-the-board cuts amounting to $76.9 million which directly affects the salary and benefits of public employees.
The cities of Los Angeles, Milwaukee and Philadelphia have different approach to the situation. They prefer temporarily shutting down fire stations or putting several fire trucks out of service. Last month, Philadelphia started the closure of several fire stations and was intended to save over $3.8 million. It is interesting to mention that the 2008 municipal bankruptcy of Vallejo, Calif. was directly blamed for excessive compensation of firefighters. Before the town went busted, the average firefighter’s pay along with its benefits was pegged at $193,000 which is relatively high.
The Obama administration skipped the June 2009 U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting in Providence in order to please the International Association of fire fighters which is a strong and influential labor union with 300,000 members. It was reported that Harold Schaitberger, the Labor Union’s President, placed a call to the office of Vice-President Biden indicating that the union plans to stage some protest in support of Local 799’s six-year contract fight with the city.
Chris Lehane, a Democratic political consultant, said that the firefighter’s endorsement is one of the most influential and most sought after in the labor front. He added that these unions can provide political candidates with thousands of volunteers and financial backing during their campaign. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the IAFF’s political action committee has contributed over $2.7 million to federal candidates during the 2008 election cycle.

Schaitberger also stated that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has already assured him that he'll try to pass the measure unto senate. Fixing America’s Transportation Infrastructure
The transportation and infrastructure sector is one of the most important sectors of society as it connects places and makes trade and commerce more effective. An airport for example significantly reduces the time it takes for goods to be transported to other places. It also opens up tourism which also translates to money. A high-speed freight rail is also equally important as it delivers large quantities of goods and stimulates effective trading among business entities. In the U.S., the infrastructure sector is struggling with the lack of funding and support from the government.
For the past couple of years, America has not conducted any significant research which will stimulate developments in the nation’s infrastructure. America’s transportation infrastructure is rotting and the government keeps on ignoring it. Amazingly, President Obama recently announced a plan to allocate $50 billion to a stimulus fund which will focus on U.S. infrastructure development. The act comes where the nation’s unemployment levels are at a record high. Currently, the nation’s unemployment rate stood at 9.6% with a possibility to increase further if the government doesn’t do anything to stop it.
The economic recession has made people more paranoid about jobs. With thousands of people in danger of being axed from their jobs every week, it is no doubt that jobs are the talk of the town. And since Obama strongly believes that job creation is every important in stimulating economic growth, he gladly saw the relevance of the construction industry as a means to generate more jobs. The additional funds will most likely rebuild and improve the transportation infrastructure of the U.S. to be able to catch up with other foreign competitors.
Investments in high-speed rail and next-generation air traffic control will benefit the economy in the long run. These are considered smart investments which will help promote productivity and sustainability. The act will benefit not only the people who will be getting their jobs back but also the whole nation who will be taking advantage of the much improved infrastructure. At a time where jobs are scarce, it is certainly helpful to invest in things that will address the very problem of unemployment instead of wasting useless money for defense.

Race to the November Elections: Political Ads and Attacks are Increasing
In every country, the elections are proven to be tense times where politicians do their best to persuade people to gain their trust and their votes as well. Who wouldn’t want to gain a seat in the government of one of the most powerful and influential nations of the world? But perhaps the most popular method for campaigning is through the use of ads. While campaign ads are practically legal and normal, there have been reports of an overall increase in the usage of ads in a negative way.
Several politicians and political groups have used attack ads to challenge their counterparts and even ruin their reputations. Figures show that candidates for state and federal office had spent over $395 million for ads compared to $286 on the year 2006. The intriguing fact is that more than half ads are offensive or negative. Political parties have increased the usage of negative ads while spending $150 million for it.
Evan Tracey, president of CMAG who tracks political ads, said that figures clearly indicate the need for political groups and their allies to quickly define their opponents and stage an engaged electorate. Candidates who do not follow this kind of strategy will most likely lose the election. This is alarming news indicating the sudden rise of negative ads to easily gain a seat and power in government.
Murkowski, the daughter of a former Alaska governor and senator, was targeted by campaign ads that were funded by the tea party movement in behalf of her challenger, lawyer Joe Miller. The Tea Party reportedly spent about $ 590,000 for the ads with about $ 400,000 during the final two weeks of the campaign period. The ads showed that Murkowski was liberal Washington insider who was not fully commited to opposing Pres. Obama’s proposed health care reform bill. Because Murkowski refused to respond to the ads, she now trails Miller in votes.
In the Florida race, Rick Scott and Bill McCollum spent over $70 million for their campaign ads alone. Scott, the one who built the giant Columbia/HCA hospital chain in the 1990s, financed his own campaign, airing ads that directly targeted McCollum’s stinking record. Not long after, McCollum and his allies fought back citing Scott’s forced resignation from his hospital chain especially during a time where there the company faced a Medicare fraud investigation. Eventually, Scott won the race but not without a tough fight.
Though not all aspiring politicians have resulted into head-butting politics, it is still an alarming fact that most of them would prefer such tactics. The Middle East Peace Process and the Threat to Peace
When we talk about the Middle East, we talk about the Arab states, Palestinians, the Gaza strip, oil and most specially Israel. The history of the Middle East dates back in Ancient times when various religions such as Christianity, Islam and Judaism were first founded. But perhaps the most famous and most significant event worth mentioning is the continued conflict between Israel, the Arab league and several neighboring states as well. With Palestinians trying to claim back their land (Israel), it is certainly a very complicated task to settle both parties.
The 2008-2009 Gaza war is a perfect example on how unstable and unpredictable the situation is in the Middle East. The Hamas and other Palestinian groups used the Gaza strip to fire thousands of rockets aiming at hitting the cities in Israel and inflicting significant amount of damage and casualties. Because of the danger it imposed to its people, Israel immediately staged a massive invasion aiming at capturing Gaza and preventing any further missile attacks to Israel. There was widespread bloodbath with over 1000 civilians losing their lives and over 5000 getting wounded. The Arab states strongly condemned Israel and even tagged the event as the Gaza Massacre.
And just recently, yet another conflict has erupted with the Israeli armed forces attacking the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. The flotilla explained that they wanted to deliver precious supplies of food and other essential materials to the people of Gaza. The raid claimed the lives of 8 Turkish and 1 Turkish-American passengers. After the event, Israel faced widespread criticisms for violating international law as it resulted in the loss of lives. This event has also deteriorated the Turkish and Israel relations as Turkish citizens lost their lives during the raid.
There is also a growing pressure to the United States to take a stand in preventing any further conflict and maintain the Middle East peace process. As a close ally of Israel but also has growing relations with some Arab states, the U.S. is torn in preserving its foreign relations with these countries that is why it is being very careful with its decisions especially if it will affect the other.
American writer George Will argued that the greatest threat to peace in the Middle East is the peace process. The bill was aimed to create more jobs and to promote rapid consumer spending as a way to stimulate economic growth and get the country out of the recession. Of the over $800 billion stimulus fund, $100 billion was spent for the development of innovative technologies which the government treats as equally important in generating more jobs and improving healthcare, transportation and energy efficiency.
But despite of the level of positivity that the present administration has declared unto this stimulus funding, there are drawbacks and flaws that went unnoticed. Take for example the claims of the government that the stimulus funding doubled the U.S. renewable energy generation capacity and renewable manufacturing capacity by 2012. The truth is the fact that it has doubled isn’t meaningful at all as we are still uncertain of its results in years to come. It is still difficult to predict and project if the growth will continue in years to come.
With regards to health and information technology, the government also claimed that the stimulus law provided a significant boost in creating electronic health records, computerizing medicine prescriptions and conducting remote treatments to patients who live in hard to reach locations. Much of the computerization of health documents and health records are still in its early stages. It is still prone to errors and glitches which will surface in years to come. Also, much of the funds haven’t still utilized while there is still no system qualified and certified enough to satisfy the needed capabilities of the health department.
There are also assumptions that the $8 billion allocated to the creation of a high-speed rail will yield favorable results in the field of transportation. In reality, not all projects will be reaching the required speed of trains as some would prefer upgrading the existing freight rail tracks with speeds up to 110 mph. The speed is considered way short compared to the standards of other countries. There is also the challenge to the meet the 2017 deadline in spending all the funds brought by the recovery act. While the U.S. is capable of manufacturing passenger rail cars, it will take years to design and test newer models of rail cars which can satisfy the high safety standards of the U.S. society.

Will the Date of Withdrawal of U.S. Troops in Afghanistan Boost the Morale of Insurgency Groups?
With over 3,000 lives lost during the September 11 terror attacks on the World Trade Center, the U.S. and its allies wasted no time in trying to eradicate a growing problem. Terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda were directly blamed for the incident and are now highly considered a threat to the peace and security of every country. And thus, Operation Enduring Freedom was launched on October 7, 2001 to hunt down and destroy terrorist groups and their training grounds. Along with other NATO countries, the U.S. armed forces have been facing strong resistance from Al Qaeda and from the Taliban Insurgency.
With every American solder getting killed in Afghanistan, the lower the confidence and trust of the American people in pursuing the war. For years, the armed forces have not only faced armed resistance but also harsh criticisms from several politicians, lawmakers and citizens themselves. It is evident that more and more people have lost their patience with the armed forces indicating that the war itself isn’t winnable at all.
After over 9 years in combat and with almost 8,000 allied casualty, the U.S. has finally decided to end the war by bring back home their troops. U.S. President Barack Obama’s announced that the U.S. will begin withdrawing troops from Afghanistan in July 2011. With suicide attacks increasing every day, the troop withdrawal is good news to all the families of U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan. Some said that it will help prevent any further bloodshed and save more American lives.
But retiring marine General James Conway said that the announcement by Pres. Obama is just going to boost the morale of insurgency groups. It is good to note that the Taliban Insurgency has been mainly responsible for the recent attacks on allied bases which are constantly claiming the lives of many allied soldiers. Conway believes that the insurgency can now wait till the last U.S. soldier leaves Afghanistan in order to reclaim the land back.
While the argument of Conway may be partly true, it is still reasonable to withdraw those troops as the war has been going on for over 9 years without any significant results. More and more U.S. servicemen are losing their lives in foreign soil on a war that is perceived as unwinnable. The War in Iraq is Not Yet Over
After 8 years of hearing suicide attacks, scud missiles and coordinated drone bombings, the U.S. armed forces has finally called on the withdrawal of its troops in Iraq. Standing firm on his decision to end the highly controversial and chaotic war, Pres. Obama implemented an August 31 deadline to cut its troops to below 50,000. For the past few weeks, the armed forces have been busy with the withdrawal of 90,000 troops, 40,000 vehicles and 1.5 million pieces of military hardware. This move was highly praised by the international community and the American majority as well.
Considering the number of U.S. servicemen who either lost their lives or lost a limb trying to fight for a war that isn’t anymore progressing as it used to be, the troop withdrawal will save thousands of lives and save the American taxpayer’s money too. During the course of the war, more than 4,400 U.S. soldiers have been killed and thousands more were injured. But despite of the massive troop withdrawals, there is no clear guarantee on whether or not the war will be over and will the U.S. lost more of its troops in the ground.
Amazingly, all indications point to the continuation of the war with more U.S. troops under constant threat of an attack from rebel positions. Just in case you didn’t know, there will be over 50,000 troops which will be left in Iraq taking on an advisory role. They will help train and assist the Iraqi police and military to be self-sufficient in protecting their nation against internal and external threats. With the growing strength of the insurgency, there might still be huge possibility that the U.S. will again be involved in a combat role to fight these rebel activists.
The Iraqi armed forces may not be capable enough to handle the different of their country. The recent suicide bomb attack in an army recruitment center which killed at least 58 people is a testament to the growing concern of insurgency and the incompetence that the Iraqi forces have been showing. There may also be a possibility that the remaining U.S. troops will be attacked forcing them to switch back to their combat role.
Despite of the wonderful and flowering promise by Pres. Obama, it is no doubt that it is just a deception as the war continues. Marijuana or Cannabis plant is a green, brown or gray mixture of dried, shredded leaves of the hemp plant. It is often referred to as a psychoactive drug as it has the capability to alter the workings of the brain. Illicit usage of such drug is prohibited by most countries as it can cause severe health problems and may cause crimes too. Several crimes with regards to homicide, rape and murder were widely attributed to the suspect having consumed a high dosage of Marijuana. But despite of its unwanted effects, it too can provide medicinal benefits when processed and used at the right manner.
More commonly, Marijuana is known to be an effective cure for common ailments such as headaches and menstrual cramps. Just recently, it has also been tried and tested with several severe diseases such as glaucoma, multiple sclerosis and the Tourette's syndrome. There have also been unofficial studies linking Marijuana to the cure of lung cancer. In Puerto Rico, there have been reports that a chronic smoker who also smokes pot will less likely develop lung cancer compared to chronic smokers who does not smoke pot. The medicinal value of Marijuana may be huge only that research is still needed to tap all the wonders it can do.
Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter said that Marijuana may in fact help the government recover from the ills brought by the huge budget deficit. In the state of Denver, Gov. Ritter used Medical Marijuana registrations amounting to over $9 million to help the state meet a $60 million fiscal emergency. The state expects a sudden surge in registrations which could reach 150,000 by the end of the year compared to 41,000 in 2009. He sees that the government can take advantage of the huge demand for medical Marijuana to raise funds and avoid any further deficit.
A Marijuana card reportedly costs $90 per year. Several legislators and policymakers are eyeing the potential of implementing taxes and other fees for the access to Marijuana medicine in order to supplement fiscal funding. In a time of recession, the government is finding ways to save money, cut cost and generate funds to maintain stability among its resources. The medical marvels of Marijuana may indeed have a huge potential. The only problem I see is the danger it could impose if there is easy access to it. The federal government should impose policies and regulations which will create controls in order to avoid the abuse of this drug.
